CFS returns old computers to the UK for recycling

In a bid to deal with the growing problem of e-waste in developing nations, Co-operative Financial Services (CFS) is sending computers back to the UK to be recycled.
Donated computers can end up in landfill in developing countries, particularly in Africa. Many developing countries do not have the necessary facilities or funds to recycle the donated computers to a fit state for use. Therefore, they simply get thrown away. However, CFS is now sending these computers to the UK to be recycled.
If computers find their way into landfill in Africa, they can leak toxic chemicals into the environment and harm people who scavenge among the landfill.
This new scheme has so far shipped 3,500 old recyclable computers to the UK for recyling by specialist firms who can make sure computers are recycled carefully and safely and that all data is wiped from the hard drives of the computers before they are given to the new users.
CFS says it hopes businesses will take more responsibility for their old computers and will make sure they get them recycled at home. “We are urging businesses to take responsibility for their used computers to stop unknowingly dumping e-waste on the developing world,” says the firm’s director of information systems, Jon Marchant.
