Security is key for government data claim experts

Data security experts at the Cyber Security Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) claim the government needs to place more emphasis on prevention of data loss and data security breaches.
The KTN, which is a business-focused group of experts funded by the government’s Technology Strategy Board, says it is time organisations came on board to help central government, local authorities and departments such as the NHS and the police in protecting data from criminals.
The KTN has made a range of recommendations for how the government can reduce data loss. The network allows the sharing of information in terms of experiences of data breaches, to help industry, government and academia to understand who and where problems occur.
It also recommends ensuring staff responsible for maintaining data security are kept motivated. Government data security staff need to understand that guarding personal data is as important as guarding personal PIN numbers, says the KTN.
Technology also plays a huge part in protecting data and internet service providers should take a more active role in developing data protection facilities, says the KTN
Lastly, the KTN says it will act as a facilitator for government departments, to aid communication and encourage collaboration between industry, government and academia to provide better data security.
