Survey shows level of data security is not improving

18/03/2009
A new survey by Check Point has uncovered shocking statistics that show levels of encryption within private sector organizations has improved by only 1% over the past 14 months.

The latest survey of IT managers and staff has found that 49% had data encryption solutions operating in their company. Some 38% admitted that no data encryption was used and 13% were not sure. The lack of significant improvement is surprising considering the large number of high profile data loss incidents in 2007 and 2008.

It is also surprising in light of the increasingly mobile nature of work, with 33% of respondents saying their firm has up 500 laptops in use and 40% having 50 laptops in use. Some 47% said they also had up to 25 PDA and smart phones in use by staff

Despite the lack of improvement so far, the IT professionals questioned said data security was their second biggest priority for investment in the coming year, trailing just behind improving VPN/remote access.

For the past year, only 29% said their company’s IT spend has increased, while 48% said their’s had stayed the same. More reassuringly, 68% said the recession would not affect their IT spending, while only 37% admitted it may decrease.
