Degaussing
- Destroys data held on magnetic media such hard drives by subjecting it to a very strong magnetic pulse from a special machine.
- Clean and reasonably quick.
- Degaussed items remain physically intact for easy dismantling and recycling.
- Destruction operation requires tight management controls and specialist equipment to verify destruction of data due to lack of physical damage to item.
- Stronger magnetic pulses are used to destroy more highly classified data.
- Not suitable for certain items including mobile phones, CDs, USB sticks.

Physical Crushing
- Mechanically inflicted damage used for hard drive destruction. Damages the hard drive platter (spinning memory disk) and/or the drive mechanism.
- Reasonably quick.
More difficult to dismantle hard disks for recycling than with degaussing.
- Physical damage to hard drive is visible.
- Only really suitable for hard drives.

Shredding
- Heavy duty machinery which cuts or grinds items into strips or bits.
- Very quick once operating but heavy and expensive equipment to get in place.
- It is possible but difficult and costly to recycle the shredded mesh which emerges from the machine.
- Suitable for all types of media, memory devices and storage media.
- For more highly classified information residue particle size will be reduced.

Wiping or Erasing
- Specialist software application or hardware utility to overwrite hard drives and some mobile devices with binary data.
- Relatively time consuming and will not work on faulty drives/devices.
- Erased items can normally be reused meaning recycling isn't required.
- Suitable for use on newer hard drives and mobile devices that can be reused. Not suitable data for tapes, CDs etc
