Secure Destruction of ITAR Equipment and Electronics
ITAR refers to The International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
The Government of the United States of America requires all manufacturers, exporters, and brokers of defence articles, services or related technical data to take measures to ensure that sensitive electronics, technology and information do not fall into the wrong hands when equipment reaches the end of its useful life.
In view of the close working relationship between the United States of America and United Kingdom, many UK defence contractors and high tech companies make use of American military equipment or circuitry which is covered by the ITAR regulations. These regulations place a responsibility on the user of the equipment to ensure its complete and safe ITAR disposal and decommissioning on retirement of the equipment. Penalties for failing to do so include criminal prosecution, fines and even imprisonment.
ITAR compliant disposal can present a significant headache to UK and European companies. The complexity of the decommissioning exercise will depend on a number of factors including but not limited to the:
- Provenance of the equipment
- Presence of specific data which may have accumulated on the asset during use
- Size and type of equipment to be commissioned (which may be hazardous)
- Geographical location of the equipment
Data Eliminate has a particular expertise in supplying secure data destruction and decommissioning services to users of ITAR listed equipment. This service is structured and delivered in a way which enables the client to maintain continual oversight of the decommissioning process and ensure compliance with its ITAR obligations.
Data Eliminate’s specialist information systems and destruction equipment can be deployed to customer premises where all ITAR work can be carried out within the customer’s own security perimeter.
Data Eliminate has established workflows and decommissioning procedures which can be tailored to the particular needs of the client. For example, audit points can be inserted into the process at stages determined by the client. Full item by item traceability is maintained throughout.
